increases to the SASSA grants for 2024 will take effect in October.

The wait is almost over 2024 SASSA grant increases. Here’s what you can look forward to

The wait is nearly over for 2024 SASSA grant increases that come into effect next month. That’s right, October is a red-letter month for anyone relying on the South African Social Security Agency to make ends meet, as 2024 SASSA grant increases come into effect. But not every government grant will benefit, nor is everybody happy about the amount. Here’s more …

2024 SASSA GRANT INCREASES

  • In a month’s time, beneficiaries of SASSA Old-Age Grants (aged 60 to 74) will receive R2 190. This is a R10 increase from the previous month and equates to a R100, or 4.8% increase, over the full year.
  • Likewise, SASSA pensioners aged 75 and older will see their 2024 SASSA grant increase to R2 210. This also represents a R10 increase, which rounds up to R100 and 4.8% for the year.
  • The SASSA Disability grant goes up by a further R10 to R2 190. As does SASSA Child Care Dependency – which is effectively disability care for children – by R10 to R2 190. The same R10 to R2 190 bump applies to SASSA War Veterans, too. Like the others, these increases bring to a close the 4.8% SASSA grant hike for the year.

Although nominal, the long-awaited 2024 SASSA grant increases take effect on these dates:

  • Older Persons Grants increase on Wednesday 2 October 2024.
  • Disability and War Veterans Grants see their increase on Thursday 3 October 2024.
  • Childcare Dependency Grants will go up on Friday 4 October 2024.

WHICH GRANTS DO NOT INCREASE?

Sadly, not every one of Mzansi’s more than grant 20-million beneficiaries will see a 2024 SASSA increase in October. The following government stipends stay the same from their previous increase back in April 2024:

  • SASSA Child Support is unchanged at R530. As is Child Support Top Up of R250.
  • SASSA Foster Care remains unchanged at R1 180.
  • SASSA SRD remains unchanged at R370.

As a result, the next increase cycle will only take place in April 2025 and there has been no word from the agency on how much those will be. However, if past years are anything to go by, don’t expect much more than a roughly 5% boost. So, perhaps an additional R100 or R110 throughout the course of 2025. Likewise, a decision still must be made on SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants that are set to cease at the end of March 2025.

HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR ASSISTANCE?

If you fall into one of the above categories and have zero financial support, you can apply for assistance by going to the SASSA service portal to book an in-person appointment HERE. Note that applications can take up to three months to be processed. However, if approved, you will be back-paid to the date of your application.

Certain grants have asset and means tests, which means you will have to prove how much income you earn every month. If it exceeds a certain amount you will not be eligible for government assistance. We’ve covered this topic before, so type the grant you’re looking for into the search bar up top and an article will be able to assist you with more detailed information.
