Car insurance terms explained

At OUTsurance, we want you to be confident in the cover we’re giving you. This is why we share our policy documents with you openly and other valuable information regarding vehicle insurance.

Here are some common insurance terms explained.

Excess

This is the amount you contribute for each claim and is noted on your schedule.

In the event of a claim the excess is payable upfront to the service provider. For example, if you claim after an accident, you will be required to pay a certain amount directly to the panel beater regardless of who was responsible for the accident.

If it is proven that the other party who was involved in the accident is the one responsible for causing the accident the full cost of repairing the vehicle is charged to them, you may be able to claim your excess back.

Valid claim

A valid claim is a claim you make to your insurer for the repairs or replacement of an insured item after an incident involving the insured item occurs. For example, if you make a claim for your insured vehicle after an accident, provided that your insurance policy covers you for that specific type of accident, you will have a valid claim.

Third-party

A third party is the other person whose property was damaged as a result of your actions.

For example, if you cross a red robot and crash into another vehicle, the third party is the owner of the other vehicle who files a claim against you.

Insured value

When you take out insurance, you’ll come across the term ‘insured value’. This is the maximum amount we will pay for any claim, less the excess and any dual insurance, betterment or depreciation.

If the vehicle is financed, we will first pay the outstanding settlement amount to the finance company up to the maximum amount of the OUTsured value, excluding:

  • any early settlement penalties
  • additional finance charges
  • any arrear installments and interest

Write-off

If a vehicle is written off by your car insurance provider, it means the cost of repairing it after it was damaged or involved in an accident is higher than the value of the vehicle.

Go to our ‘Written off’ page for more details.

Insurance quote

This is the estimated monthly insurance premiums you’re given based on the information you provided about your vehicle and the type of insurance you chose.

Insurers can give telephonic or online car insurance quotes.

The online insurance quote process might require you to submit your details to your car insurers and then finalised through a call.
